Causes and Solutions for Adhesive Marks When Applying PET Color Change Film

2024-09-07

PET color change film refers to a color change film that uses PET release liner (PET backing paper). Compared to regular PVC color change films with paper backings, PET films have a smoother surface, higher gloss, and lack of an orange peel effect. However, according to industry experts, a common issue with PET-backed color change films is that they tend to leave adhesive marks during application.

Why is it easier to leave adhesive marks when using PET-backed color change films?

Causes of Adhesive Marks in PET Color Change Films

1.Adhesive Quality Issues:
This could be due to the adhesive having a high initial tack, leading to insufficient lubrication during application. Another possibility is that too much adhesive was applied during the coating process, making it easier for the adhesive to come off.

2.Application Technique Issues
If the film was not applied smoothly or had air bubbles during the first application, the installer might lift the film and reapply it. When lifting the film, the adhesive can stretch or become fuzzy, and smoothing it out again can cause the adhesive to shift and accumulate, forming raised points.

Here are some tips shared by a store that deals with such adhesive marks:

1. Wait Time After Heating: During the heating process with a heat gun, it is recommended to wait for about 3 seconds after heating before applying the film. Do not apply it immediately (the reason being that the adhesive becomes more fluid when heated and needs to cool down to reduce melting).

2. Use of Defoaming Agent: Mix a defoaming agent using shower gel and water, then spray it on the areas with heavy adhesive marks (on the car, not on the film). The foam agent makes it easier for the adhesive to become lubricated, reducing adhesive marks.

3. Applying Defoaming Agent on Squeegee: If adhesive marks are still visible while squeegeeing, you can spray a little defoaming agent on the cloth or felt wrapped around the squeegee.
